The Guidelines describe the stroke structures of the components of Chinese characters and outline the component decomposition of Chinese characters. If vendors launch Chinese font products that conform to local writing styles based on the Guidelines, it may help to remove the differences between character glyphs used in publications and computer systems (see Figure 1 for examples of differences). As the use of computers in teaching is gaining greater popularity, such differences have affected the teaching and learning of Chinese-character-writing. For this reason, there are differences between Chinese character glyphs displayed on computer systems and those shown in the textbooks. Currently primary school textbooks published in Hong Kong generally adopt Chinese character glyphs that concur with local writing styles, whereas character glyphs commonly used in computer systems mainly originated from the Mainland or Taiwan.
The Guidelines also aim to facilitate members of the public in handling Chinese electronic information by enabling them to use character glyphs that they are familiar with. The Guidelines are designed to serve as references for vendors to develop Chinese font products that conform to the writing styles commonly used in Hong Kong. The Reference Guide on Kai Style Character Glyphs for Chinese Computer Systems in Hong Kong and the Reference Guide on Song Style (Print Style) Character Glyphs for Chinese Computer Systems in Hong Kong (the Guidelines) are compiled to provide a set of principles on Chinese character glyphs used in computer systems that is applicable to Hong Kong.
